Nursery Units of Independent Schools located in Thornton and Milton Keynes in the District of Aylesbury Vale.

Thornton Early Years consists of our co-educational Genevieve Nursery coupled with our girls-only Reception class.

Many of our Nursery children come to us from nearby Milton Keynes and other towns and villages in Buckinghamshire.

Our Nursery provides children with a stimulating, safe and secure environment where they are happy and well cared for by the friendly committed and qualified Nursery Staff.

The Nursery welcomes boys and girls at pre-school or kindergarten age from 3 years to 4 years.

For girls and boys in the Nursery and for girls in the Junior School up to age 8, we offer wrap-around daycare from 8am to 6pm, 51 weeks per year.

We cater for all cultures and/or dietary requirements.

2. How are parents involved at the setting and how can I be involved?

We aim to create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive and where parents feel that they are able to approach us about anything relating to their children.  We have formal opportunities for contact with parents at our initial Key Person Meetings, through our 2 year old progress checks and Parents’ Evenings.  There are also many informal opportunities to chat and when parents request a meeting we aim to meet with them as soon as possible.  We welcome parents to join us for our Harvest and Christmas Concerts, Dance Presentation, Easter Bonnet Parade, Sports Day and Teddy Bears picnic.  Parents are encouraged to inform us of their own observations, photos and events from home via our Home Celebration Stars and Scrapbook Journals.  Parents receive an update on their child’s progress each term. Strong relationships with parents are important to us.  We operate an open door policy. We encourage parents to inform us directly if they have any comments or concerns.  We encourage ongoing dialogue with their child’s Key Person. 

3. How will practitioners work with me to share information about my child's progress? What is additional for children with SEND?

The above opportunities are available for all parents/carers but in addition to this we welcome more frequent opportunities to meet with parents of children with SEND; how often will be discussed and agreed with the parents.  We also offer updates through home/school books, email or phone calls if this is more convenient.  We will regularly monitor the short term outcomes for children with SEND and would invite parents to be part of this review and the planning session for new outcomes.  If other professionals (Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist) are visiting we would aim to give parents the opportunity to meet with them on their visits too.  

4. What specialist services and expertise are available at, or accessed by the setting?

Our SENCO Felicity Jacobson attends the termly Local Authority SENCO Liaison Groups.  The setting has access to advice from The Early Years SEND, Access and Inclusion Team, through telephone consultations or with parental agreement, child-specific advice from an Early Years SEND Advisor.  A range of online resources and websites are available to the setting for information.  We are happy for professionals involved with the child to visit and welcome this opportunity to develop our knowledge.  We have links with the local Children’s Centre and Health Visitors’ team.  We are happy to attend Multi-Professional Meetings.

Our staff team is highly qualified with a minimum requirement of a Level 3 qualification in Early Years Education.  We employ an Early Years Professional who regularly attends training and cascades information to staff members.  We work with all professionals as required for each child and always encourage them to come and visit the relevant children in the setting. If required we will contact and work with the Buckinghamshire Early Years’ Service. We will obtain parental consent before contact is made and we will include parents in all decisions made and meetings held. If speech and language concerns are identified by the setting, we will advise the parents to take their child to the Speech and Language screening sessions. We work with Speech and Language therapists and the reports they provide to support the children in their language development.

The staff continually receive and refresh their training.  All staff are qualified within Early Years.  Our SENCO Felicity Jacobson attends the termly Local Authority SENCO Liaison Groups to remain up to date with current policies and procedures. We continually reflect upon our practice and will attend training when a particular need is identified.

5. How accessible is the setting's environment (indoors and outdoors)?

Our indoor and outdoor environment is fully wheelchair accessible as all on one level and we have a disabled toilet.   We try to create areas where distractions are minimised for focused learning and to create sensory areas to support children with sensory processing issues.  We will aim to sources equipment as necessary.

6. What are the transition arrangements for supporting children and families?

We understand that each child’s transition needs are individual and aim to work with parents.  We will be happy to discuss with you what you think would work best for your child and be flexible to meet their needs to make transition as smooth as possible.  We liaise closely with settings that the children transfer to, passing on records and encouraging visits.


7. What future plans does your setting have for developing its SEND?

During the coming year, we will provide staff training with regard to SEND focusing on Speech and Language.
