Early Years Local Offer Response

How does the setting know if a child will need extra help and what should families do if they think their child may have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND)?

We assess all children when they start Jack in the Box. If we felt a child need extra support we would either speak to the local health visitor or our BLT Inclusion officer. If a family felt their child had special educational needs they can talk to the child's keyworker and the preschool SENDCO. They can also speak to their GP or Health visitor. We will work closely together to ensure the child gets the right support.

How will staff in the setting support a child with SEND?

All staff will be aware of any child with SEND and the SENCO and the child's keyworker will keep staff up to date with the support the child is receiving so it is consistent across all members of staff.

How will the curriculum for the setting be matched to a child with SEND's needs?

Any activity planned for the children will be adapted so that every child, including children with SEND can take part. We have various resources that can help children with SEND. The Key worker along with the SENCO will look at the child's SEND needs and adapt the curriculum accordingly.

How will staff work with families about how a child with SEND is doing and how to support a child's learning?

The Preschool Senco and the child's key worker will keep the parents informed of their child's progress at preschool. They would also discuss with the parents how to support their child at home.

What support does the setting offer for a child with SEND's overall well-being?

A child with SEND will supported throughout the whole session as necessary. It could be that the child will just need support during snack time, when using the toilet or if their nappy needs changing. Where necessary we will have an extra member of staff to help support a child with SEND.

What specialist services and expertise are available at, or accessed by, the setting?

We have a Preschool Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, who works closely with the BLT Inclusion team. We have access to Health Visitors and Speech and Language therapists. If necessary we can access Educational Psychologists and Occupational Therapists.

What training have the staff supporting children with SEND had or are having?

Our SENCO attends regular Senco training to keep up to date. All staff have had ASD training and Speech, Language and communication training. If we have a child with a specific need, all staff will attend the necessary training in order to support that child at preschool.

How will a child with SEND be included in activities outside the setting?

A child with SEND will always be included in every activity whether it be outside or inside. The activity may need to be adapted slightly for the child and if necessary a member of staff will support the child throughout. We have a ramp leading out to the garden so accessibility is not an issue

How accessible is the setting's environment (indoors and outdoors)

The Preschool has wheelchair accessibility. All doors are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. We have a ramp leading from the back door in to the outside area. We have a disabled toilet. The main hall is also set out in order to accommodate children with SEND.

How will the staff prepare and support a child with SEND to join the setting or transfer to a new setting/school?

The Manager, Senco and the child's keyworker will have meetings with the child's parents and professionals to discuss if there are any changes to be made to the setting. We will also look at purchasing resources and equipment to support the child and we will look at the whole routine of the session to see if there is anything that needs changing. Parents of the SEND child must be happy with the changes, if any, to the provision before the child starts. Once a child is ready to transfer to a new school, we will have meetings with the school and provide them with all the information they need in order to support the child.

How are the setting's resources allocated and matched to a child's Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities?

Depending on the SEND of the child, we will make sure we have the resources to support the child whether that be staffing, equipment or both.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support a child with SEND will receive?

It depends on what the SEND is and how much support the child needs. Once this is determined, the type of support and how much will be decided.

How are parents involved at the setting?

Parents are welcome to be involved in the setting as much as they want to be. As we are a committee run Preschool we are always looking for parents to join the committee to help with management decisions and this is a very good way for parents of children with SEND to get involved.

What future plans does your setting have for developing its SEND provision for example, training, facilities?

We are committed to making sure all our staff are kept up to date with the relevant training of Early years regularly.

Which other Local Authorities/ Counties/ health providers do you have contracts with?

We have contact with local Health visitors and Speech and Language therapists.
