Ashridge Day Nursery is based on a farm in Latimer with a variety of outdoor spaces to choose from. The nursery is able to take children from 2 months to 5 years, open 51 weeks of the year 7:30am to 6:30pm.

Description

Our nursery aims to provide the best care and education for all children under the age of five. This includes any child who may require additional services or help to reach their full potential. We will work with external support systems as well as utilising our well trained staff to help all children to develop.

You Said We Did

We are currently working with parents and staff to be able to offer a parent's evening in September 2020 - We held parents evening via telephone which enabled us to share children's development with their parents more formally.

Parents informed us that they are not all receiving updates via our admin site and some are not on Facebook - We have now set up a closed Whatsapp group for parents and staff to share nursery information and to share ideas, called "Nursery News and Natter"

2. How are parents involved at the setting and how can I be involved?

We aim to offer a setting which is welcoming and inclusive to all families, so they feel able to approach us regarding their child’s development.


Each day a member of familiar staff will give each family a handover, a handover will be tailored to each family as we know some would rather know about their day rather than food and sleep. As we get to know you staff will learn what is important to you as a parent and ensure the feedback reflects this.


We hold an informal parent’s evening twice a year, this allows you to discuss your child’s development with their key person.


We use Eylog as an observation system to compile your child’s learning journey. You as a parents are able to add observations from home, comment on a member of staff’s observation and read reports when they are published. It also allows you to see where they are against the development matters framework which we follow to support their development.


We send out an annual questionnaire to all parents to ensure we are listening to their views and are offering a service which meets their needs.


When parents request a meeting we aim to meet with them as soon as possible.
Parents are given the email address for their room leader to ensure they have a way of communicating with them and sharing messages.

3. How will practitioners work with me to share information about my child's progress? What is additional for children with SEND?

We complete two year progress checks which are then shared via eyLog and at parents evening.


When a child moves to another room or onto another setting we compile transition reports to ensure they can be supported on the next step of their learning journey.
At our 6 monthly parent’s meetings, parents can speak with their child’s key person regarding their development and time at nursery.


We offer an open-door policy and aim to make ourselves available on for informal opportunities at families request.


We complete a progress summary each term – this is shared via eyLog and explained to parents prior to sending out.


Our SENco supports each key person to complete assess, plan, do review and SEN support plans, these are shared with families and are compiled alongside other professionals reports.


We will seek advice from other professionals to best support each child whilst we may be awaiting referrals or reports. We also use various tools that are recommended by our local authority, we share these resources with families and staff caring for the child.

4. What specialist services and expertise are available at, or accessed by the setting?

We liaise with the Buckinghamshire Council Early Years Service and follow their support and advice.

We have a sign of the week from the Makaton website, we share this with parents as it changes. We speak with speech and language therapists, health visitors and outside agencies such as occupational therapists who give us extra support should we need it.

In the past we have sought advice from a parent who is a trained speech and language therapist.


We also have another nursery who we work closely with and share our experiences and tools to support children in our care.

5. How accessible is the setting's environment (indoors and outdoors)?

We have a ramp to the front door, the children’s toilets are at ground level and do not require steps to access them.

The baby room is upstairs in the setting, along with the babies sleep room.

All outside opportunities are accessible for all children and families, we use open farmland, a small meadow and garden space directly outside the front door.

We have reading and quiet areas within each room for children to use if they wish to, these have soft furnishings to make them cosy and inviting.


We have access to the farmland so have the opportunity to explore many different sensory opportunities. Staff have access to a budget so should they need to make reasonable adjustments to resources then this is available to them.

6. What are the transition arrangements for supporting children and families?

We understand that leaving your child for the first time can be a big decision and can be very emotional, we always reassure parents with telephone calls and photos when they collect. We also encourage parents to call during the settling sessions and their first day to put their mind at rest. 

We offer settling in sessions to each family, so they can all meet the staff within the room and complete relevant paperwork to support their child’s journey with us.


We offer a welcome leaflet which gives them an idea of what we offer and expectations within that specific room.


We make notes on their all about me forms if parents tell us anything which we feel is relevant.


We tailor the settling in sessions to each individual child, with flexibility on start dates should they need longer to settle. We offer three initial sessions and for babies we offer more to fit with their routine.


If a child transitions from another session we seek parental permission to contact this setting and discuss their development and ensure we find out all information regarding the child and their family.

7. What future plans does your setting have for developing its SEND?

We are waiting training to be released to train another member of staff to support the current SENco.

We use reflection tools to ensure we are offering children, staff and their families the support they need, these are available for each room on request.
