Staff attend any relevant training as and when required to ensure they keep on top of new information and staff share their training within the setting with their colleagues.
- 2. How are parents involved at the setting and how can I be involved?
Parent partnership is vital when caring for young children and is something we believe is the biggest asset to ensuring the children are happy and settled. All parents have access to their child’s learning journals that are completed via our early years online app. Parents are welcome to speak to staff at any time about their child’s developmental progress. The nursery holds regular parents’ evenings which is a good time to have an in depth discussion about the child’s development. Our team of staff ensure that all children’s needs are identified and information on how we are supporting them is shared with the parents and other relevant professionals if required. To support further communication with parents we use email, our online app (EyLog), daily diaries and ensure staff give a good handover when children are dropped off or collected. We welcome parents to stay and play sessions during the year and we will add anything they suggest to our planning to support parental input.
- 3. How will practitioners work with me to share information about my child's progress? What is additional for children with SEND?
Every child is allocated a key person who is responsible for settling them in to the nursery as well as planning for them based on their individual needs. Monitoring their progress is extremely important and is carried out daily by the key person. We have two Special Educational Needs Coordinators who have received training through our local authority. We also attend regular update meetings to ensure that we are providing colleagues, children and parents with the best support methods possible.
- 4. What specialist services and expertise are available at, or accessed by the setting?
If a child requires support from outside professional services parents will be spoken to prior to any support being put into action. Some professional services may attend the setting and observe children in the nursery environment. Parents may be offered extra support and advice through parenting classes, playgroup schemes, support with speech and language, paediatricians, occupational therapists, and classes that will enable a child to develop within their identified area of learning.
The SENDCO will offer advice to parents and colleagues and ensure that we are following the correct protocol when looking to access support for the child(ren).
- 5. How accessible is the setting's environment (indoors and outdoors)?
Every child has a unique personality and will access the nursery experiences in different ways; therefore, we plan for your child’s development based on observations that are personal to their own learning journey. The environment is adapted in ways that will capture your child’s individuality and allows them to explore at their own pace with the support from their key person and other staff within the setting.
On occasions the staff take the children out to explore our local community where they may visit places like the local library and museum. A full risk assessment is carried out for each outing to ensure that the area is suitable for every child as well as being safe. A higher adult/child ratio is used when on outings.
The front entrance of the setting has been adapted where we have a built in ramp to make the nursery more accessible. The younger children are based in three upstairs rooms which do require walking up a staircase, however the Pre-school is situated on ground level and therefore more accessible to all. There are accessible toilets both upstairs and on ground level. To the garden there is a clear path with three small steps that lead to the garden area and at the back of the garden there are steps that lead up to the back-play area.
The setting identifies what resources are required to meet the children’s individual needs through carrying out room and setting reviews as well as resource audits. The operations manager supports the manager and SENDCO with identifying what resources or changes to the environment may be needed to best support children attending.
- 6. What are the transition arrangements for supporting children and families?
When a place is offered to a child, we carry out settling in sessions, this allows for parents and children to develop a stronger bond with the key carers and for the staff to gain more information about the child and family. Some settling in periods may require to be longer or be extended based on the child’s individual needs.
When a child is transitioning to school the key person, SENDCO and manager will complete a transition report which informs the receiving school about the current development and needs of the child. With the parent’s permission, information such as individual support plans will be shared and a meeting will then be arranged, usually in the second half of the summer term. The meeting will include parents, the SENDCO, the school SENDCO and any invited additional professionals to meet and discuss the child’s needs to ensure that the transition runs smoothly.
- 7. What future plans does your setting have for developing its SEND?
The SENDCO attends termly liaison groups to ensure we are keeping up to date with the most current policies and procedures. All staff carry out core training and are then provided with additional training when required allowing for continuous CPD.
The Nursery SENCO, Manager, Owner and Operations Manager attend local early years meetings where we are kept updated with local and national changes in childcare. Any information gained from these meetings are then discussed through staff training and any changes are implemented where required.
