Youth Voice: Children and Young People in Care

In Buckinghamshire, the Children in Care Council is called ‘We Do Care’. They are a group of children and young people who are either looked after or care leavers and work to ensure looked after children and care leavers have their voices listened to and promote their right to be part of the decision-making process that affects their lives.

We Do Care is split into 3 groups, WDC Juniors, WDC Seniors and Focus groups. We Do Care have also recently established a We Do Care Champion role.

We Do Care groups

WDC Juniors

This group is for all children and young people aged 5 to 11 years old and consists of quarterly activity days called a ‘Have YOUR Say Activity Day’. These sessions include things such as crafts, games, discussions, messy play, and much more. We also spend time listening to each other and talking about things that matter to us as well as talking about Children’s Rights. Each year We Do Care Juniors have a Christmas and summer party.

WDC Seniors

This group is for all young people aged 12 to 25. The seniors' group does lots of different things such as focus groups, campaigns, meetings, activity days, and more.

WDC Focus groups

These sessions help us look at important things that are happening in the looked after community, monitor the other projects we do, and look at new opportunities for looked after children and young people to have their say.

We Do Care Young People’s Champions Role

We Do Care Young People’s Champion role was established as part of plans to improve communication between We Do Care and Corporate Parents. The role of young people who have experience in the care system is a paid one and also provides a qualification and opportunities for a young person to develop skills including those relevant for a young person looking to progress in a health and social care role. The champions attend the Corporate Parenting Panel and are the link between children looked after and care leavers and other services as well as taking an active role in driving the We Do Care work plan and recruiting new young people.

Home visits and virtual contact are also offered to children in care as an alternative method of engaging with We Do Care in particular those out of the county.

Who can join?

If you are aged between 5 to 25 years and are in care or a care leaver then we would love to hear from you.

We need people who have strong views, are passionate about positive change and enthusiastic about making a difference to better the lives of children and young people in care in Buckinghamshire.
